Directed by ‘The Diving Bell & the Butterfly’ auteur Julian Schnabel and filmed over five nights in Brooklyn, Lou Reed performs in entirety his concept album of a doomed love affair between two heroin addicts against the harsh backdrop of the Berlin Wall. Originally dismissed in 1973 for being too bleak and austere, Schnabel’s wonderfully decayed and decadent set design, along with performances by Antony Hegarty and actress Emmanuelle Seigner, both enhances and celebrates one of rock’s most misunderstood albums.
